Iraqis have valued and pursued education in many areas of study since ancient times.In recent history Iraqis had a thriving system of higher education and sent thousands of students to study all over the world. But now Iraq's educational system is in ruins. Universities have ceased to function, lacking safety, faculty and resources of all kinds
Refugees who have escaped to Syria and Jordan (estimated at more than 2.2 million Iraqis by summer of 2007) cannot legally find work. With no means to earn a living, students and their families are forced to abandon higher education altogether. There is an immediate need to strengthen the present generation of Iraqi students and provide them the tools with which they can ultimately rebuild their nation.
